HUACHUMA, SAN PEDRO (Trichocereus pachanoi or Echinopsis pachanoi)
This sacred plant has been used for thousands of years by the ancestral cultures of our nation. The clearest vestiges of the use of San Pedro in ancient times, are in the Chavín culture, which developed in northern Peru 3,500 years ago; although we assume that its use must go back many centuries before the formation of Chavín. Its use has continued throughout history to this day, having been used by the Mochica, Chimú, Nasca, Tihuanaco, Wari culture, etc.
The sacred medicine Huachuma was one of the main master plants used during the Inka period for the preparation of different sacred drinks.
The name San Pedro comes from the colonial era and it is believed that this name was given because a relationship has been made with the Christian saint who has the keys to heaven.
The huachuma is a cactus scientifically named as Trichocereus, of which there are different varieties and two have been widely used as part in the preparation of sacred drinks, they are: Trichocereus pachanoi and Trichocereus peruvianus.
The Sapan Inka Retreat Center makes use of this ancestral medicine as part of the Ayahuasca Retreats. San Pedro is used as a complement to the use of Ayahuasca. According to the way we use this medicine, the ritual of San Pedro is only performed after going through a cleaning process with Ayahuasca medicine. San Pedro medicine has a different effect from Ayahuasca, usually the non-ordinary state of consciousness that is lived with San Pedro lasts from 12 to 15 hours. The ceremonies of San Pedro organized by the Sapan Inka Retreat Center are usually done during the day. Medicine is taken and immediately afterwards, they participate in an ancestral Inca ritual conducted by an Andean priest or pampamesayoq, this ritual is known as the office, it is an offering of thanks to the spirit or energy of the earth and the spiritual strength of the mountains This ritual is intended to flourish, that is, it is a symbolic connection waiting for harmony in the material and spiritual: peace, joy and prosperity. While this ritual is performed, the effects of San Pedro begin, after the ancestral ritual, the process takes place throughout the day on the sacred mountain. Working with San Pedro is an internal process of self-healing, of connection with oneself and with the forces of nature, where there is a state of expansion of consciousness, of emotional psycho opening and a greater understanding of our nature and internal structure. . The state of consciousness that is experienced with the San Pedro helps to understand more clearly the cleaning process that has been experienced during the Ayahuasca sessions, facilitates, in general, a greater understanding and knowledge of oneself.
Huachuma is an Inca medicine that has the possibility of giving some individuals a connection with archetypes or dominant of the collective unconscious. This powerful medicine can lead to states of consciousness in which unconscious complexes rooted in the individual can be dissolved; although to really obtain beneficial effects, it is necessary that its use be complemented with techniques of psychic and spiritual domain, which allow a re-elaboration and re-integration of the modified state of consciousness, to which the person who ingests the sacred medicine Sometimes it is possible to carry out the healing process during the full moon night, according to the atmospheric and energetic conditions. Traditionally, Huachuma medicine has a relationship with the lunar phases. Unlike the ayahuaska this medicine, in general, gives the ability to move and focus on the light intensifying and clarifying the senses.
Western scientists have conducted different studies on this sacred plant and the main component found in it has been called mescaline, a substance that was also found in another sacred plant in Mexico known as Peyote. The name mescaline was a mistake of the scientists who analyzed a sample of the cactus giving it the name of mezcal buttons, instead of its real name peyote buttons. The first experience with mescaline was performed in 1897 and the first total synthesis of the compound was made in 1919, this being the first entheogen isolated and purified from a plant.
There are several ways to prepare this medicine, the plant can be consumed fresh and raw, dried and pulverized by adding water or refined in a cooking of several hours; It can also be prepared in a mixture with other medicinal plants. It is recommended that the dose be administered by the medical doctor who knows the preparation of the medicine.
